Artist's Comments

Finally got around to finishing my drawing of Avimimus portentosus.

I have a very strong subconscious impression of this dinosaur for some reason. I can't remember if all my old dino books portrayed it the same way, or if it's really just one illustration that stamped the archetype in my brain, but from the beginning I knew my Avimimus had to be puffy, red, and sporting a head crest. No real fossil evidence for any of this really, but it WAS the first non-avialan dinosaur reported to preserve evidence of feathers (before Sinosauropteryx, back in the 1980s). A distinctive ridge and quill knobs on the arm were cited as evidence, which of course was probably spot on. The arrangement of the wing feathers here are based on embiggened Caudipteryx wings. Even though this guy had tiny arms, the quill knobs mean it probably had heftier wings than its Liaoning relative.

UPDATE: Decided to do a background after all. The old one with just (sandstone) ground conveyed to me that it was climbing around the flaming cliffs, when the Nemegt was actually much wetter than the previous Djadochta. Hopefully this does a little better job of conveying its habitat.

Makes me think of a prehistoric roadrunner. Awesome job.

It's freaking handsome, that Avimimus.
Such odd dinosaurs the 'avimimidae'.
:iconmattmart:
That they are! Well, technically right now there's only one, but an Avimimus bonebed currently being described might actually show that this dome-skulled form (which has a better preserved but apparently different type of skull than the type specimen) is in fact a different species or genus. Guess I might have to change the name eventually...

Well, new names for old avimimids ;)
